Which Is Better? 🐟
Many visitors arrive believing that lagoon dives are easy beginner dives while ocean dives are deeper, more difficult, and only suitable for experienced divers.
In Bora Bora, that is not necessarily true.
The lagoon is heavily influenced by wind conditions and can sometimes experience stronger currents and rougher surface conditions than ocean sites.
Likewise, ocean dives are not necessarily deep dives.
Most dive sites around Bora Bora have a maximum depth of approximately 20 meters (65 feet), while Tapu is usually around 12 meters (40 feet).
The real difference is not difficulty.
The real difference is the type of underwater experience.
Lagoon Diving
The lagoon offers:
- Manta rays
- Eagle rays
- Coral valleys
- White sand channels
- Beautiful light effects
Ocean Diving
The ocean side offers:
- Larger schools of fish
- Reef sharks
- Napoleon wrasse
- Dramatic reef formations
- Reef passes and wave action
Neither environment is inherently better than the other.
Many experienced divers are surprised to discover that some of their favorite dives in Bora Bora take place inside the lagoon.
For this reason, we usually recommend experiencing both environments whenever conditions allow.
What makes diving in Bora Bora special?🦈
Few destinations offer such a variety of diving experiences within such a small area.
One day you may find yourself watching manta rays above a coral valley.
The next day you may be surrounded by eagle rays in a white sand channel.
Or perhaps drifting along an outer reef filled with schools of fish while waves crash above the reef in the distance.
Every dive is different.
That diversity is one of the reasons divers return to Bora Bora year after year.
Planning your dive adventure🏖️
Dive site selection always depends on weather, sea conditions, currents, and diver experience levels.
A private dive experience allows each day's dive plan to be adapted according to the conditions and the interests of the divers.
Whether your goal is to see manta rays at Anau, eagle rays at Toopua, schools of fish at Tapu Canyon, fascinating underwater landscapes at Haapiti, or blacktip reef sharks at Tapu, Bora Bora offers unforgettable underwater experiences for every diver.
